What you should know about Targu Mures

We continue our journey in Transylvania area and we arrive this time in Targu-Mures. This is the biggest city of Mures county and is situated in the center of Transylvania on both sides of Mures River. It used to be an industrial and economical center of that part of the country and it was also named through the years,  Mures Osorhei. Here is what you should know about Targu Mures.

Historical background

The archeological findings confirmed that the city used to be inhabited since Pre-historical times. Human tracks and traces belonging to Cris culture, the oldest Neo-logical culture in Romania were discovered here. The area was inhabited in Latene era and Bronze period and continued to be dwelled after the Romans abandoned the territory. In the preset, the biggest urban Magyar community lives here.

Roses Square where the John the Baptizer Church is located, the Tower of the Franciscan Order and the Palace of Culture are the main attractions of Targu Mures. In the opposite side of the Square we find Apollo Palace and the National Theater, symbols of a cultural city. Other important touristic points are the medieval fortress built in the 17th century where cultural and artistically activities take place, churches of all religions and buildings with a great historical and cultural significance. Statues representing Avram Iancu, Romanian Solders together with museum and monuments keep the identity of the city still alive.  Tg Mures is known for its Illuminist cultural and literary movement that led to the appearance of the School in Ardeal (Scoala din Ardeal). Its representatives Gheorghe Sincai and Petru Maior widely brought their contribution to affirming the continuity of Dacian and Roman population in this part of the territory after the Roman troops left the area. They fought for the recognition of equal right both for Romanians as well as for Magyars. In Targu Mures, the revolutionary ideas of Avram Iancu and Alexandru Papiu Ilarian were brought to life in the Blaj Gathering program.

Today, Tg Mures is one of the most modern cities of Transylvania, together with Cluj-Napoca and Alba-Iulia. It was in Tg Mures that the first hospital of Transylvania area was built.  The hospital is still well appreciated due to its modern and latest equipments and both for its well-trained doctors. In Targu Mures, SMURD was founded by Raed Al Arafat. SMURD is a state Romanian emergency service that interferes in the most difficult rescuing operations.
