The city of Amara is located right on the shores of a lake with the same name, in the county of Ialomita, in the country of Romania. The settlement was founded during the reign of Matei Basarab. The town with continental climate, hot summers and cold winters is located about 9 km from the city of Slobozia. The resorts of Amara are highly popular for their spa and treatment facilities which are healthy for rheumatic, gynecologic and dermatologic diseases. The mentioned resorts have several baths and pools with hot water from the lake. You can also lie out in the sun on the lake shore or jump in the water and splash around or wander around the region visiting museums.

History of Amara

In 1864 the settlement was taken over by the state and it was then that humans started dwelling there. P. Poni was the first one to pick up on this city and he initiated the first chemical examination of the lake water in 1887. In the year of 1896 the county authorities have decided to establish a bathing resort here and exploit the hot spring of Amara.

Amara Lake is about 4 km long and 200-800 m wide which contains several salty minerals, mostly sulphurous and chlorous ones. Thanks to the magnesium sulphate and sodium sulphate dissolved in the lake water gives a bitter taste to the water which suppresses its salty taste.
