Baile Govora – Bathing and health resort
Govora is very rich in iodic and bromic water being among the best in Europe. The climate of this region is moderate continental with Mediterranean influences. Sights to see
Around the Baile Govora there are several historical and artistic monuments which are must see sights. Learn more about the history of Dacian and Roman history. Visit the museums in Ramnicu Valcea and Govora or the museum complex at Maldaresti. Only 6 kilometers from the resort you will find the monastery of Govora, founded by Vlad Dracul (also known as Count Dracula) during the 15th century.
The most beautiful and refined architectural Romanian construction is the Horezu Monastery built in 1693 which was stated as world heritages by UNESCO in 1995. Another magnificent building is the One-Piece-Wood Monastery from the 17th century. Bistrita Monastery, Cotmeana, Arnota, Cozia and several others can be found in the surrounding region and are well worth visiting.
Hikes and trips
There are several hiking and excursion opportunities in Govora. You can visit the surrounding resorts close by, the larger towns and their important monuments and sights. Visit the County Museum at Ramnicu Valcea, the Memorial House of Anton Pann, the monument of Heroes and the Zavoi Park. You can also visit the bathing resorts of Calimanest, Cozia and Caciulata, Lotru Valley and Voineasa resort.
On the way you must not forget to stop by at Cozia Monastery. Reaching Valcea and the resort of Olanesti you can go forward and take a hike to the 23 springs and many other touristic sites.
Important touristic sites at Baile Govora
As it was already noted among the most important sites of Govora we can mention Govora Monastery, one of the oldest churches in Romania with unique and special medieval architectural features. The church can be found in the town of Mihaiesti, about 6 kilometers from Govora.
From the monastery there is a footpath across the woods and over the hill which leads to the Surpatele Monastery and the One-Piece-Wood Monastery. Heading towards the village of Pietrari you can visit Bistrita Monastery. Take the forest path across the pass of Bistrita, climb up along the springs in Capatanii Mountains and reach the peak of Zmeuratului in a height of 1938 meters. Take the road towards Horezu and visit Romani village. The local monastery resembles a fortress with thick walls made of bricks and stones.
