About medieval times

In the castles and forts of medieval towns lived only those who contributed to the welfare of the town such as tanners, potters, firemen, masons and locksmiths. Each guild had to take care of a defense tower while the others were excluded to live outside the city walls. That is how the people lived in the medieval town of Sibiu. Over the decades the Austrian dominions have left their mark on the local culture and so did the Saxons and the Romans.

The fortified Church of St. Margaret

In Medias you will find St. Margaret Church in the center of the town, an evangelical sanctuary which completes the ancient medieval town with its century old silence from another time. Today you can see around the Church the defensive fortifications: the double walls and the towers.

The fortified Church of Biertan

The church is an important representative of Gothic art with its three fortified walls, stone carvings, carved wooden figurines which represent characters that were present at the scene of Crucifixion, painted scenes from the life of Mary and Jesus’s childhood and figures of saints.
