Best hiking tours in Domogled Mountains – Visiting the White Cross and the Jelarau spring

The Domogled Mountains offer several trip and hiking opportunities. Most of them set out from the famous and popular Baile Herculane and leads you to many beautiful and breathtaking locations among hills, mountains and valleys. This time let us take you along the „Kitten’s Footpath” to the White Cross located in the Domogled Mountains and the Jelarau spring. Along the way you can take a look at Suscu Peak and Domogled Peak, pass near the Stiubeiului Clearing and the Susoare spring. The whole trip is about 7-8 hours long. Pack your backpack and get ready for a nice hike.

Taking the beaten path to the White Cross

From the road towards the Cerenei Valley, behind Cerna hotel you will find a path running up towards the serpentines among woodlands.

This is the path which all the mountaineers take from the town of Podeni to bring their goods to Herculanelor Market. Stroll along the track and exit the woodlands in order to set feet on the limy path. In the meanwhile you can admire the Herculane region and its beautiful flora. Later the path goes upwards ad you must climb until you reach the White Cross, near the Cave under Serban or in other name Serban’s Cave. Take the time to admire and be amazed by the wonderful panoramic view of the Cerna Valley. This location is easily accessible during the summer season but in the winter season the snow and ice covered paths are harder to be passed.

From the White Cross along the “Kitten’s Footpath”

After a short rest take the Kitten’s Footpath from the White Cross which leads you down the line towards the east in the woods into Jelarau Valley. Among rocky walls the path leads upwards again to the karstic spring of Jelarau located on a little clearing and popular camping area. The path turns left in the northern direction towards Suscu Peak, the most important peak of the Domogled Mountains. This peak is located on the Domogled Reservation area. After catching your breath, head towards the town of Podeni along the bank of the mostly dry Jelarau Brook. On the right hand side there is a path leading towards the Domogled Peak which crosses through the Musuroaie clearing.

Through hills and valleys

Continue your way straight ahead along the line of Jelarau Valley among beautiful the beech woodlands. After a few kilometers you will reach the large Stiubeiul Meadow which is very rich in vegetation such as lilacs and small pine trees. Go on the left side of the meadow towards the town of Poieni and Bahnei Valley. Look around and admire the spectacular view of the mountains covered with woodlands and the Mehedinti Mountains. There is nothing more majestic than the naturally beautiful creations of God. Walk, climb up, descend below and admire the beauties of nature.
